Nutrition Counseling
LOR Physical Therapy offers nutrition counseling in Laguna Niguel with Melissa A. Mathes, MPH, RD, CSSD, a registered dietitian and board certified specialist in sports dietetics. There are two services: medical nutrition therapy and sports nutrition.
Two kinds of nutrition counseling
Both start from your goals, your health history and how you eat now.
Medical nutrition therapy
Uses food and overall nutrition to help ease symptoms and lower the risk of chronic disease. It evaluates your nutrition and health goals, lab work, medical and diet history, supplements, herbs, medications and current diet, then composes an individual meal plan that suits your lifestyle, with guidance on healthy lifestyle and behavior choices. Her approach: use mostly plant-based foods for medical nutrition therapy and overall health first, supplements second if warranted.
Sports nutrition, comprehensive
Includes the medical nutrition therapy concept and addresses athletic or training goals: body composition and sweat rate analysis, sports nutrition for before, during and after, and hydration guidelines. It includes fueling recommendations for race day and tournaments and carbohydrate loading where needed, plus an individual foundation meal plan and training fueling guidelines. Her approach: eat healthy, train hard, improve performance and feel good.
Your dietitian
Melissa A. Mathes, MPH, RD, CSSD, holds a Master of Public Health, is a Registered Dietitian, a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics and Nutrition, and has certification in Obesity and Weight Management Level II. She works with LOR through our partner Total Nutrition Counseling (TNC), listed on our partners.
