What hand and wrist therapy treats

Small joints and tendons do a lot of work, and they heal slowly.

Wrist sprains and recovery after a fracture

After a cast or surgery the wrist is stiff and weak. We rebuild range of motion and grip step by step.

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis

Pain on the thumb side of the wrist, often worse when you lift a baby, pinch or turn the wrist.

Trigger finger

A finger that catches or locks when you bend it, because the tendon is irritated where it glides.

Thumb and hand arthritis

Wear in the base of the thumb and the finger joints causes stiffness and aching, and exercise and pacing can help.

“The team at LOR did an outstanding job helping me recover from a broken wrist. I came in 1 week after getting surgery... I had almost no use of my left arm. …”

How we help your hand recover

Range of motion

Gentle, progressive movement to get a stiff wrist, thumb or fingers moving again.

Grip and hand strength

Strengthening that builds from light resistance to the demands of your work and daily life.

Hands-on care

Manual therapy for the joints and tissue of the hand, wrist and forearm.

Numbness or tingling in your fingers?

Numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, especially at night, points to carpal tunnel, which has its own page. Pain that begins at the elbow is on elbow pain, and arthritis in the hand is covered under arthritis and joint pain. If you are recovering from surgery, read post-surgical rehab.

Questions about hand and wrist pain

What causes hand pain and thumb pain?

Hand pain and thumb pain can come from tendon irritation such as De Quervain’s, from arthritis at the base of the thumb, from a sprain or from a nerve. Where it hurts and what sets it off tell us which.

How long does wrist fracture recovery take?

Wrist fracture recovery depends on the break, whether you had surgery and how stiff the wrist is after the cast. Your surgeon sets the limits and your therapist builds the movement and grip back.

How do I treat a wrist sprain?

A wrist sprain is rested briefly, then moved early and strengthened as it settles. A therapist can check it is only a sprain and show you the exercises.
